Before I get into a story about what a great night we had at Southern New Mexico Speedway; I would like to send out our love and prayers to the Johnson family. As some of you may have read or heard tonight, MVT sponsored Jason Johnson took a nasty ride in his #41 machine Sprint Car while racing with the World of Outlaws at Beaver Dam Raceway. The “Ragin’ Cajun” is no stranger to the Southern New Mexico Speedway. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jason, his wife Bobbi, and their son Jaxx. As more details become available, we will let you all know. Right now, we simply ask that you keep the family in their prayers.

Here at our home track of Southern New Mexico Speedway it was a full night of racing. And it “Schure” was exciting. As many of you have probably caught on, it would be the 21TX of Brandon Schure taking home a much deserved and long time coming victory in the POWRi 305 Sprint Cars.

It would however be the Sun Valley USRA Stock Cars taking the track first. With a bet on what hair color track manager Rue Stone would have to dye his hair if Jed Smith in the 171 won another race. I believe it was decided it would need to be pink. Heat 1 would see Tyler Beiter from El Paso, TX taking the win. Pete Vargas in the 777 would follow a close 2nd.  Heat 2 would see the substitute driver of Jason Privette piloting the 32B in the absence of Bryan Bagwell taking the win with Tularosa’s Bryan Bennett a close 2nd as well. Jed Smith would come around in 3rd.  The “A” feature would come down to the last lap close to the last 2 turns. Jimmy Ray in his #9 would be sent to the back early in the 20 lap main event with contact with Jason Josselyn in the #74.  Pete Vargas in the #777 would get passed close to the end of the race by Donovan Flores in the 07 with Jimmy Ray trailing behind. At the wave of the white flag, Jimmy Ray looked like he may take the win. However, he would be upset at the very end by the 07 of Donovan Flores. Rue’s blonde hair would be safe as Jed Smith would limp his car to a 6th place finish. Following behind 1 and 2 would be Pete Vargas, Bryan Bennett in the #10, and Jason Josseslyn would recover as well to round out the top 5.

The Casa Nissan Legends would also have 2 heats of their own. And again we would see the 717 of Teddy McCutcheon take a heat race victory in heat 1. With at least a full straight away lead, McCutcheon would secure his lock in to the inversion. Eli Woody would finish a strong second. Heat 2 would see the young Daniel Blaeser in his 1I machine take the checked flag edging out the B52 of Cameron Scogge. The A Main would be 20 laps of excitement, as the #77 of Michael Gonzalez would once again find himself parked in victory lane. Close behind would be the I1 of Daniel Blaeser who himself would lead several laps in the A Main. Gunner Harris in the #54 would come in 3rd . Teddy McCutcheon would come in 4th and would pull the 1 of Eli Woody close behind him.  It’s a breath of fresh air to see the younger drivers in Blaeser, Harris, and Woody continue to consistently do well.

The Mark Sosa Roofing Late Models would have 12 cars checking in. The first heat would go the Christy Barnett in the #44. Heat 2 would go to the G17 of Fito Gallardo. Both heat races would be fast and smooth. The A Main would be action packed as well. With the 01 of Dave Deetz leading the first 10 laps of the 20 lap main event. It looked as if Dr. Dave would hold on the get the victory. But it would be Josh Cain taking the lead from him. With the J17 of Jake Gallardo riding the high line and sliding by both. Gallardo would be able to hold on the victory and win the race. It would be Cain and Deetz following behind him in that order. Fito Gallardo and his G17 machine would trade positions with the 22 of Jonathan Ortega throughout the race. It would be the G17 coming in 4th followed by Jonathan in 5th. We would lose the 3 of Javier Zapien, Jr. a strong competitor on the first lap due to mechanical failure.

30, you read that right………THIRTY Hacienda Carpet and Tile USRA X Mods would check in tonight at the Southern New Mexico Speedway. With 4 heat races and an B Main-the put on a show for sure. Heat 1 would belong to the 17 of Rob Moseley from Los Lunas, NM. With fellow Northern New Mexico driver Ralph Dutcher in the 41 coming in 2nd. Heat 2 would belong to the “Horizon City Monster” Paddy Rush in the 52TX who would make his way back to the Southern New Mexico Speedway after having missed a few races. El Paso, TX racer Tristin Gattis in the 49 would come in 2nd. It would be the #88 piloted by Nathan Smith winning Heat 3 followed by veteran racer Billy Roy Harris in the 57. Justin Allen would find his #33 car taking the checked and winning Heat 4 followed by Mike Rosales in the X777. There was a lot of beating and banging in the B Main with the Top 8 moving on the A. And there were quite a few drivers we don’t normally see in a B Main. Winning the B would be once such driver in Nick Rivera in the 8N, followed by the 93 of Greg Gorham, Sherman Barnett driving his #82. The Main Event finish would be as exciting to watch as it was to see Jed Smith win his first race last week. The 88 of son Nathan Smith would have a flawless night where he hit every single mark on the track. He would run 25 laps to take the win. A clearly proud and excited Jed Smith would bear hug his son in victory lane. In the last 2 laps of the race, it would be Nick Rivera and the 8N getting by the 44JT of Jaime Torres to steal 2nd. With Torres following in 3rd, Dickie Gorham in the 3 would find himself in 4th and Justin Allen would hold on to a 5th place finish.

In a change from last weekend, the Sprints once again had their wings. With 18 Lucas Oil POWRi 305 Sprint cars checking it. And it “Schure” would be some great racing. Lorne Wofford in the #18 would take the Heat 1 victory with the Zipp Construction 97 of Derek DeMartino following in 2nd Heat 2 would belong to the 36DD of Matt Ziehl with the 9 of Robert Herrera coming in 2nd.  Fellow Ziehl, Rick Ziehl would win Heat 3 in the 20Z with up and coming young driver Ricky Holden in the 15 taking 2nd.  The Main Event would belong to the 21TX of Brandon Schure. Brandon has been chasing a victory at Southern New Mexico Speedway for some time now. And much like Nathan Smith in his X Mod victory, would be almost flawless in his driving. Appearing to hit every mark and hold off the likes of Lorne Wofford and Rick Ziehl, in that order. Derek DeMartino would follow in 4th in the 97, and 5th place would go to Las Cruces. NM driver Ricky Holden.

We “schure” were glad to see you in Victory Lane Brandon, and congratulate you on your win!! Don’t forget, if you happened to miss tonight’s racing action; Ed Frazier with High Desert Video will have DVDs of tonight’s racing for sale.

Don’t forget to check our website for upcoming events. Including our annual fireworks display coming up July 7th with the return of the POWRi  305 Sprint Cars. It will be the biggest and the best. Come early because it will be packed.

NEXT weekend we welcome back the USRA Modifieds, The USRA Stock Cars, the Super Trucks, and the Claimers.

Once again, thank you to all of our fans, sponsors, drivers, crews, and staff for a wonderful night of racing. Congratulations to all of tonight’s winners.  Once again, take a moment to say a prayer for the Johnson family. Be sure to like us on Facebook to stay up to date on all upcoming events and happenings.
