So many beautiful things have been written, spoken and shared about Jason Johnson in the last week. The racing community has experienced a huge loss. We ask that you all continue to keep his family, his race team, his friends, and all who have crossed paths with him in your prayers. In our own tribute, we honored Jason the best way we know how: racing. I hope that all of you reading this, were able to catch last night’s racing action. If you were not there, this is a video that you want to make sure you pick up from Ed Frazier and High Desert Video. The Rancho Milagro USRA Modified 41 lap A Main, was hands down the best race I have seen all year.

We began with the American Documents & Dent Works Super Trucks with their 2 heats. With a season of difficult luck, we would find the 44 of Christy Barnett come from the back of Heat 1 to win it. With a close 2nd going to the #72 of Bryan Christie. Heat 2 would be the usual stacked heat with the UNO of Brian Kliene taking the win followed by veteran racer Walton Kyle, Sr. coming in a close 2nd. The Main Event would bring with it an unusual set of issues, but some awesome racing . Within the first few laps of the A Main event, we would have a red flag so that the ambulance could check out and make sure Walt Kyle Sr. in the #6 was okay. The driver would be okay, the truck... ehhhhh, we weren’t sure initially. As his son Walton Kyle Jr. would give up his truck to his Dad to finish the race. So Sr. would jump and finish the race in the #21 truck . While Jr., would be able to get the #6 machine back together and finish the race in his Dad’s #6. The contact early on in the race would eliminate the #13 of Scott Kinney from the race. The UNO of Brian Kleine would come home victorious and hold off the late in the race charge of the #44 of Christy Barnett. Rusty Bowen in the #98 would come home 3rd. Walton Kyle Sr. would come in 4th and Devan Smith in the 22 would round out the top 5.

The Clayton Donnelly Roofing Claimers would hit the track next with their 2 heats. It would be Robert Gannaway in the #22X winning heat 1. He would take the lead early in the race and never look back. Ryan Apodaca in the #53 would come in 2nd. Heat 2 would see Gabriel Ledesma in the #54G taking the win. With Jared Latham in the #12 coming in a close 2nd. The A Main started off as a repeat of the heat races. With some early cautions, we would see the C12 and the 33G end up colliding head on. And coming to a stop with the C12 of Carter Oakes facing the wrong way on the front straight. Both cars would continue. And it would begin a race of saving tires. 2018 points champion Stefnie Smith in her 87S machine would flatten her tires, causing her to pull her truck into the infield unable to complete the race with 3 to go. It would be the 22T of Jamie Torres taking the win for the night. Followed by the 79 of Chris Marsh. The 52 of Santa Fe’s Alfred Hicks would come in 3rd. With the 54G of Gabriel Ledesma and the 33G of Diana Gonzales rounding out the Top 5.

The Sun Valley Hardware USRA Stock Cars never disappoint. They always manage to put on one heck of a show, and this Saturday night was no different. Heat 1 would see Paul Telles Jr. in his 48T machine take the lead and once again never look back. With the up and coming 8 of Mark Smith coming in 2nd. Heat 2 would belong to Pete Vargas in his 777 machine with Bryan Bennett in the 10 coming in 2nd. The main would not be so kind to the 777. Within the first few lap, he would make contact and lose not only a tire but his rear end. Jed Smith in the 171, Mark Morris in the 21z, Donovan Flores in the 07 would battle up front along with the 74 of Jason Josselyn for most of the race. It would be a late race yellow with fluid on the track, that would ultimately be the deciding factor in the end. Mark Morris in the 21z would have the lead that he had to battle to take. On the restart with remains of fluid on the track, he would find that the top line that the 07 had been running be the spot to be in. Unfortunately for the 21z and the 171 of Jed Smith, Donovan would find that high line and cruise by them. He would take the lead with 3 to go, and Jed Smith would come in 2nd, followed by Mark Morris, Bryan Bennett, and Paul Telles Jr. would round out the top 5.

We weren’t running Sprint Cars this Saturday night. But our Rancho Milagro USRA modifieds would put on a fabulous tribute to Jason Johnson. With 38—yes, you read that right, 38—Modifieds checking in, we would have 5 heat races, along with 2 B Mains, and close out the night with a 41 lap A Main Event. Fito Gallardo in the G17 would win heat 1, Royal Jones in the 131 would win heat 2, Bumper Jones in the 111 would win heat 3, Richie Davis in the X57 would win heat 4, and Jimmy Ray would win heat 5. With the top 16 in passing points locked into the A Main, the top 8 inverted by their points average; the remaining 22 cars would run 2 B Mains. Jessie Haynie in the #2 would find victory in B Main 1. Moving on the A Main would be the 2 along with the 50 of Ralph Adams Jr., the 32 of Max Sadler and the #3 of Dickie Gorham. B Main 2 victory would belong to the 8N of Nick Rivera, with Austin Adams in the 85, Jared Perez in the 86, and Dustin Smith in the #65 moving on to the A.

With the stage set for the A Main Modified race, we would line up in a tribute in the customary missing man formation with all MVT cars going on in row 1. Leaving the pole position open for the fallen 41. Then we would have a row with 1, then 4, then 1, then 4, then 1, then 4, then 1, then 4. As advertised, we would run 41 laps. With the winner taking home $4, 441 pay check. The USRA A Modifieds would only see 1 yellow in their entire race. And we would see the 65x of Carlos Ahumada Jr. leading the first 10 or so laps. With about 21 laps to go (forgive my memory on this one). We would see that the 111 of Bumper Jones take the lead. As he was in lap traffic, he would get passed by the J17 of Jake Gallardo who had worked his way up to the front in commanding fashion. The last lap 5 laps we would see swapping back and forth of the 2. Both sharing the low line and the high line through out. Lap traffic would come into play in the swap. Ultimately, on the last lap Bumper Jones in the 111 would “make it stick” and take the lead and the win. Jake Gallardo in the J17 would come in 2nd, Carlos Ahumada Jr. would finish a strong 3rd in his 65X, followed by the 9 of Jimmy Ray and the 131 of Royal Jones would round out the top 5. It was exciting, clean racing throughout. And worth the purchase for sure of a video if you missed it.

We would like to thank all the sponsors for raising our pay out through out each and every class. We couldn’t do it without our amazing sponsors. Our fans for making it out for some great racing with us. Our drivers of course, who put on the show. Our staff for making it all happen.

I close this this; death is never easy. And everyone grieves in different ways. I can’t even imagine what the family of Jason Johnson as well as his crew are going through. I am some 2,000 miles away. Not able to catch Jason race on a regular basis. Not seeing him run weekly or nightly for that matter. And I was sad. I shed a tear. He was for sure a class act. He truly never let a fan walk away from his trailer without talking to them, autographing something for them, making their night. He never walked into MVT and didn’t speak. He had a smile on his face the entire time. It’s rare to see someone in dirt track racing with that mentality. With a passion not only for racing, but for his fans and his sponsors. And I was sad. That not only the racing community, but the world lost someone with such a kind nature. Who appreciated everything and everyone. A smile. The world needs so many more Jason Johnsons. And it’s sad that the original won’t be around. I hope we did you proud Jason. I hope you realized that we are just a small fraction of the positive impact you had on this world. God Speed my friend. Rest in Paradise until we meet again. #Forever41
