Josh Cain won the Hacienda Carpet & Tile USRA X-Mod feature.

No. Unfortunately, this is not a remix of the Keith Urban song. But besides fireworks, red flags were abundant tonight at Southern New Mexico Speedway. The night would begin with fully packed grandstands, the USRA Stock Cars, The Casa Nissan Legends, the Late Models, the POWri 305 Sprint Cars, and the Hacienda Carpet and Tile X Mods.

With 18 USRA Stock cars checking in, we would have 3 heats to start off the night. The track would be a little heavy for the Stock Cars. In the first time behind the wheel, in what I think they said 3 years: Jeremy Stamper in his #12 car would win Heat 1. With Bryan Bagwell new scar and all making his comeback coming in a close 2nd. Brother to Jeremy Stamper, Shane McNutt would win Heat 2 with Paul Telles Jr. coming in 2nd Heat 3 winner Bryan Bennett would have a strong solid win. Lloyd Turner in the 0 would come in 2nd. The Main Event would not be uneventful. Mark Morris and the 21z would leave the track first due to mechanical failure. Dawson Manicki would be asked to leave the track due to heavy smoke coming from his valve covers. We would lose several other cars in the 25 lap Main Event. Probably most exciting would be Pete Vargas on his birthday losing a tire off his 777 machine that would bounce around in Turn 3. Up front Jed Smith would have his hands full holding off the #9 machine of Jimmy Ray. Jimmy would find something coming out of 2 and make his way up through the field. He would fall just a tad short with the enthusiastic 171 winning another Main Event. In what has become his signature move, we would see Jed once again climb the front fence to the roaring applause and cheers of the fans. Jimmy Ray would come in 2nd. Bryan Bagwell in the 32B had a solid 3rd place finish followed by Bryan Bennett and Paul Telles Jr. in the 48T rounding out the Top 5.

Jed Smith won the Sun Valley Hardware USRA Stock Car feature.

The Casa Nissan Legends would have a great car count with 3 heats of their own. The first heat would belong to the 77E of Eric LeCroix with Chelsea Scott in the #4 coming in 2nd. With a return to the track, Dave Smith in the 11D would win heat 2 with Teddy McCutcheon coming in 2nd. There must be a theme here of drivers taking a break and coming back to win. Because the Heat 3 winner would be the 237 of Steven Arellano that we haven’t seen in a while at Southern New Mexico Speedway. 2nd place would belong to the hard-battling racer of Cameron Sogge in the B52. The Main Event would see some exciting racing action with some early on different leaders. Eric LeCroix in the 77E would take the lead initially, Zach Rodriguez making his way back to the track as well, would be a leader for a few laps as well. But within the first 10 laps, Michael Gonzalez in the #77 would take the lead. And he would maintain that lead. With strong battles through the rest of the field. The 05 of Aasa Flores, the B52 of Cameron Sogge, and the 11D of Dave Smith would swap back and forth and battle behind Gonzalez. Finally, we would see Steven Arellano and Gunner Harris creep into the top 5. Aasa Flores in the 05 would make contact and fall back to finish 6th. Top 5 would be Mike Gonzalez 77, Cameron Sogge B52, Dave Smith 11D, Steven Arellano 237, and Gunner Harris in the 54.

Michael Gonzalez won the Casa Nissan Legends of the Southwest feature.

The Late Models would only have 10 check ins, and 1 heat race. Donnie Newcomb in the #88 would be the heat race winner. Jonathan Ortega in the #22 would come in a very close 2nd with the 3 of Javier Zapien Jr coming in 3rd. Missing from heat race action would be the G17 of Fito Gallardo and the J17 of Jake Gallardo. It would be Jake coming from a 10th place start making a charge to the front of the field, taking the lead by getting by Christy Barnett in the #44. Jake would make it look effortless as he got through lap traffic leaving behind the 2nd place finisher of Barnett. Xavier Ortega in his X24 machine would come in 3rd. Brother Jonathan would finish 4th in the 22. And Donnie Newcomb would round out the top 5 in his #88.

Jake Gallardo won the Anthony Sosa Roofing Late Model feature.

29 X Mods would check in for racing action Saturday night. And 29 would start the exciting and entertaining Main Event. Heat 1 would would belong to the 8N of NicK Rivera who would win in commanding fashion. Heat 2 winner would be John Carney in the 7C. Billy Roy Harris in the #57 would take the win in Heat 3. And Justin Allen would win Heat 4 in the #33. We started 29 X Modifeds, sadly we would lose over ½ of the field. John Carney would take the first super hard hit into the wall. Collecting with him the 49 of Gattis, the 95 of Clayton Donnelly. We would lose more cars as the night proceeded. The most vicious and devastating would happen coming out of 4. Involved and unable to continue would be the 3 of Dickie Gorham, the 18G of Cooper Guffey, the 8N of Nick Rivera, the 44JT of Jaime Torres, and the 93 of Greg Gorham. Much like Jake took the lead, we would see the 3J of Josh Cain take the lead and not look back. Billy Roy Harris who is more impressive every single time he runs would finish 2nd, Justin Allen in the #33 would come in 3rd after battling his own car most of the race. The 82 of Sherman Barnett would come in 4th with Mingo Jauregui rounding out the top 5.

The POWri 305 Sprint Cars would have 3 heat races. Starting off with the first win in the Sprint Cars would appropriately belong to the 131 of Royal Jones. And what a better way to start it off. Celebrating MVT night at the races, Royal would open the race night thanking all of those in attendance. Making sure to acknowledge and thank his employees for their hard work and dedication. And it would be another not so familiar face of Vance Wofford in the #1 car winning Heat 2. With his Dad Lorne Wofford winning heat 3. Did I mention that red wasn’t your color? With an unusually high number of red flags, the main event for the POWri 305 Sprint cars would include flips and broken wings for Robert Herrera, Melissa Gorham-Roybal, Ricky Holden, Jerry Mosher, CJ Hulsey, Kohl McCutcheon and Joseph Hernandez. With the reds coming out and bring back the field it would be with less than 10 laps left, Royal would get passed by Lorne Wofford to take the lead. A lead that the 131 had held on to for the greater part of the first 20 laps. Ricky Ziehl in the 20Z would sneak by the 131 as well. Unfortunately, yellows would require the 20Z to attempt to pass the 18 of Lorne Wofford. It would be the 18 holding off the 20Z, with the 131 of Royal Jones coming in 3rd, Wes Wofford in the 19 would finish 4th, and the “Wildman” Kyle McCutcheon would grace the Southern New Mexico Speedway with his presence for a top 5 finish in the 39C.

Lorne Wofford won the Lucas Oil POWRi 305 Sprint Car feature.

MVT night is always one of my favorite nights. The fireworks always exceed any expectations that I may have. It’s always awesome to see packed stands. I appreciate the loyalty and pride of each and every MVT employee in attendance. Tonight, was extra heartwarming and bitter sweet. It would be very emotional and thoughtful ceremonial removing of his 131 wing to replace it with the MVT 41 wing of our friend and brother Jason Johnson. Although our USRA Modifieds honored Jason on the weekend of his passing, it was our POWri Sprint cars paying tribute to the great, on his birthday weekend. It was hard after watching the wing swap to not be cheering and screaming for the 131 to win the race. Hats off to every single person who worked their tails off to make this night happen. Thanks to Royal Jones, Jimmy Ray and all the MVT family. And thank you to the SNMS family, for making the night run as smooth as it did. I hope the stands are that full next weekend as well.
