Carlos Ahumada Jr. won the Rancho Milagro USRA Modified feature.
Carlos Ahumada Jr. won the Rancho Milagro USRA Modified feature.

In commanding fashion with the best of the best behind him, it would be the 65x of Carlos Ahumada Jr. taking the checkered flag and winning in the Rancho Milagro USRA Modified feature. In a season that would see a lot of firsts, this one by far will go down as one of the most exciting. As it is with any new winner we see, we love the see and hear the excitement. But a more perfect race probably hasn’t be run by one driver. Seemingly not missing one single mark; Ahumada would hold off veteran racers in Christy Barnett and Jake Gallardo with a late race red flag to take his first ever win. Congratulations to Ahumada and his team on a victory well deserved and well earned.

The Sun Valley Hardware USRA Stock Cars would start the evening off. In one of the sharpest looking cars out there, it would be the #7 of Cecil Fanning from Rio Rancho taking the win in the first heat. With Bryan Bagwell in the 32B machine a close 2nd. Not a stranger any longer to winning, we would see Jed Smith pilot the 171 to win Heat 2. With Pete Vargas in the 777 a close 2nd. The beginning of the A feature looked a lot like Heat 1. And for the first part of race, it looked like Cecil Fanning would once again come out victorious in the #7. But it would be a pass down low coming out of 2 that would send the 07 and familiar car of Donovan Flores to the lead. Jed Smith in the 171 would soon catch up and over take 2nd. Battling for the majority of the race to stay up front, with less than 10 to go, we would see Tularosa racer Bryan Bennett take 3rd over the 24 o Shane McNutt who would settle in to 4th. Jason Josselyn would round out the top 5. Holding off Mark Morris in the 21z.

The RacerWebsite.com Mini-Sprints would check in 4 cars total, with the 27 of Jody Lawhorn sweeping the night. Lawhorn would win his heat with the 15E of Brian Baca a close 2nd. Car failure would cut the Main Event short for Baca, as he would find himself in the infield not finishing the race. Drew Cassidy would redeem her 4th place finish in the heat race, to come in 2nd. With the 5 of Christian White coming in 3rd. Brian Baca would round out the field in 4th.

Jody Lawhoen won the RacerWebsite.com Mini-Sprint feature.

The American Documents & Dent Works Super Trucks would put on one heck of a show. With Walton Kyle Jr. winning heat 1 with ease. A close 2nd would be Lloyd Duffey who would make his debut for the season at the Southern New Mexico Speedway in his #33 truck. Like son, like father as Walton Kyle Sr. would win heat 2. With Todd Froats in the L750 coming in a close 2nd. Unfortunately, their nights cut short the main event would see Dave Deetz in the 01 and Christy Barnett in the 44 involved in a yellow flag within the first few laps of the main event. Once again, Walton Kyle Jr. would park his #21 machine in victory lane. With Devan Smith in the 22 coming in a close send. Todd Froats in the L750 rounding out the podium in 3rd. Following would be the 33 of Lloyd Duffey and the 28 of Josh Hammond who also would make his way back out to Southern New Mexico Speedway.

Walton Kyle Jr. won the American Documents & Dent Works Super Truck feature.

Robert Gannaway in the 22x would take the win in Heat 1 of the Clayton Donnelly Roofing Claimers. With Jared Lathem coming in 2nd. Heat 2 would belong to Stefnie Smith in the 87s with Chris Marsh and his 79 machine coming in 2nd. The Main event would see a lot of trading spaces. We would see the 12 of Jared Latham and 79 of Chris Marsh go back and forth. And despite Latham taking the lead for Marsh after a late race restart, he would be unable to hold off the 79. The 13M of Kelly Moore, who had also been running up in the top 4 for a majority of the race, would find himself taken to the pits by a wrecker, ending his night early. Stefnie Smith would find something late in the race in her 87S machine and recover after a too high entry in 2 would send her back a few spots. She would end up 2nd in the Main. Jared Latham would settle in at 3rd. With Jamie Torres in the 22T coming in 4th after a strong and consistent run by the driver all night. Art Davis would round out the top 5 in his 24B machine.

Chris Marsh won the Clayton Donnelly Roofing Claimer feature.

The NMMRA Non-Wing 360 Sprint Cars were back at the Southern New Mexico Speedway. Always exciting and entertaining. Saturday night’s racing would be no different. Robert Marfia in the #24 wingless 360 Sprint Car would cruise to victory in Heat 1. Not surprising at all, Rick Ziehl would win heat 2 in the 20z. It would be the #7 of Shon Deskins winning Heat 3. The Main Event would be an exciting green to checkered race with the 24 of Marfia, the 20z of Ziehl and the 13 of Dennis Gile racing back and forth. Marfia would lead the first 12 laps of the 30 lap main event, with Gile getting by him and Ziehl and holding Ziehl off to win once again at Southern New Mexico Speedway. The 20Z of Ziehl would have trouble in lap traffic and not be able to catch the 13 of Gile once he took the lead. Robert Marfia would have to settle for a 3rd place finish in his 24 machine. With Shon Desking in the 7 coming in 4th and Randy Smith in the 26 rounding out the top 5.

Dennis Gile won the NMMRA Non-Wing 360 Sprint Car feature.

Did somebody say Modifieds? With the best pill draw of the night, the 111 of Bumper Jones would start and finish on the pole of Heat 1. Jesse Haynie would do the same in Heat 2. Start on the pole in his #2 machine and win Heat 2. Heat would belong to Carlos Ahumada Jr. in the 65X. The G17 of Fito Gallardo would win Heat 4. The Main event would see 26 Rancho Milagro USRA Modifieds take the opening green. The first laps of the main would see Haynie in his #2 Modified, and Tim Tharp in his #3 up front. Holding off the charge of the G17 of Fito Gallardo. And then we would see emerge from the first 4 rows and take the lead the 65X of Carlos Ahumada Jr.. Behind him we would see the 44 of Christy Barnett and Fito Gallardo battle for the 2nd place. The G17 would lose a motor apparently, and cost to a stop on the back straight away after making his way off the track. Ultimately, a few laps later fire would erupt under the hood of the G17 and the race would go red. Ahumada Jr. would line up in first place with Christy Barnett in the 44 and the J17 of Jake Gallardo behind him. Jake would not take off on the last restart and Christy would reclaim 2nd, only to have Jake get by her. Gallard, howevr, was disqualified during post-race technical inspections. Therefore the 44 would get the 2nd place finish while Jake Boles in the J7 would move from 10th up to a 3rd place finish. Almost slowly and silently. As we looked up, it was a where did he come from excitement. Tim Tharp would hold on to a 4th place finish while Royal Jones finished 5th. It is always awesome when a driver gets his first win. And tonight, was no different. You almost had to hold your breath wondering if the 65X would be able to hold off a late race charge on a restart from the J17 and the 44. And exhale with happiness when he did. Congrats Carlos Ahumada Jr. and team. It was refreshing to see you win. Heck of a run kid.
