It’s not always pretty…

What’s the phrase we hear often times when it comes to racing? “It ain’t rubbin’ it’s racing” A little bit harder to do in a Sprint Car, but not impossible. And it would be early race contact that would find the #15 of Ricky Holden on his side, and the #77 of CJ Hulsey in the lead. CJ would be flawless from that restart going forward and drive his way straight to the Winner’s Circle.

We would start our Saturday Night off with 3 heats of the Casa Nissan Legends. With 19 Legends checked in for the night, Chelsea Scott in the #4 Legend would be the winner of Heat 1. Zach Rodriguez would be back once again and take the win in Heat 2. The up and coming driver of the 1I Daniel Blaeser would win Heat 3. Remember when I said it isn’t always pretty? That would perfectly describe the Casa Nissan Legend Main. With more than a handful of yellows, we would lose a little more than half of the field. But it would be no stranger to winning in the Legends, Dylan Harris with his comeback winning the A Main. Dylan would get his way to the front within the first 10 laps and easily drive to the front. He would hold off a charge from Daniel Blaeser in the 1I who would ultimately come in 2nd. Followed by his little brother Gunner Harris in the #54 who came in 3rd. Cameron Sogge in his B52 machine would be able to avoid the yellow to stay with the top pack and finish 4th. Eli Woody would round out the top 5 in his #1 Legend. Keep an eye on the top 5 from tonight, at any given race they all could win a Main Event.

The USRA stock cars would hit the track next with their 2 heat races. Heat 1 would have Paul Telles Jr in his 48T take the win. Telles has consistently been finishing top 2 in heat races and improves each and every week. Also, no surprise in Heat 2. As Shane McNutt, would park his #24 machine once again up front. McNutt would win Heat 2. The Main Event would have a lot more rubbing with the racing. With surprise new driver of the 777 in Anton Salopek filling in for Pete Vargas. Salopek would be running top 5 behind the #74 of Jason Josselyn. However contact in 1 and 2 would send Salopek to the rear along with the 171 of Jed Smith. Josselyn would remain up front until a late race caution would give the advantage to the 07 of Donovan Flores. He would sit patiently back, as he has been doing all season. When the opportunity presented itself he would take the lead. Just as steadily and quiet the 0 of Lloyd Turner in his return the Southern New Mexico Speedway would finish 2. He would hold of the rubbing of the 171 of Jed Smith who would finish 3rd 3/1000th of a second behind Turner. Josselyn would be pushed back to a 4th place finish, with Anton Salopek in his guest appearance in the 777 rounding out the top 5.

Holy Gallardo Batman! That’s what we would all be left saying at the end of the Late Model Main Event. Both Jake and Fito Gallardo would not run a heat race for the night. Rick Ortega in the #24 would finish 1st in Heat 1. With Javier Zapien Jr winning Heat 2 in his #3 machine. Both Rick Ortega and Javier Zapien would run up front for the first part of the A Main. With Rick taking the lead in commanding fashion. However, Jake Gallardo would not be stopped tonight. Jake would slide by Rick bring along with him Dad Fito in the G17. Unfortunately for Ortega, the Late Models would also not be without their own rubbing tonight. The 357 of Oscar Perez would make contact with the #24 and bring out the yellow. Rick Ortega would come back and “retaliate” as deemed by track officials and have to leave the field. Ending his spectacular run of the night. Jake Gallardo would be flawless once up front and avoid any rubbing along the way. Josh Cain pulling double duty tonight in the #59 would get around Fito and finish 2nd. Fito Gallardo would come with a solid 3rd place finish, after starting the night 15th. Carlos Ahumada Jr. would pilot his Dad’s #54 Late Model and finish 4th. With Javier Zapien Jr and the #3 rounding out the Top 5.

We would have 24 USRA X Mods check in for racing action. With 4 heat races, we would find the 49M of Duane Murphy take the win in Heat 1. Heat 2 would belong to the Barnett Harley Davidson driver Heath Grizzle in the #82X. Don Parra would wheel his #7 machine to win in Heat 3. And Jonathan Barcena would win Heat 4 in his #22 machine. With a record, the A Main would have only 3 yellows. I could actually be wrong, as I only remember 2 myself. Grizzle would start out up front, and never look back. He was the car to catch in the 82X and had a flawless race hitting every mark and never giving up the lead. All the racing would happen behind him. With several drivers coming to the front and swapping positions. Ultimately the #88 of Nathan Smith would settle in to and finish in 2nd place. Points leader Nick Rivera in the 8N would quietly slide his way up to a 3rd place finish. Justin Allen in the #33 would come in 4th after being pushed back. Rounding out the top 5 would be Noah Hollingshead. Noah would be making a return after a week off in his 3H machine. When I started off “It isn’t always pretty” for once, it wasn’t the USRA X Mods with the beating and banging. Or as we so often hear, rubbing.

16 305 Sprint Cars would check in tonight for racing action. Heat 1 would belong to the 15 of Ricky Holden. Heat winner would be the #9 of Robert Herrera. In Main Event action, we would see the #77 of CJ Hulsey take the lead and take off. Hulsey’s race from the initial yellow would be flawless. His only issue or stumble would seem to come as he hit the back of the field and began to get into lap traffic. 2nd and 3rd would swap positions throughout the race. It would the 20Z of Rick Ziehl getting by the 40X of Don Grable to finish 2nd. Grable would settle for a 3rd place finish. The 97 machine of Derek DeMartino would come in 4th. DeMartino would fall back towards the end of the race after running a solid 2nd and 3rd the first part of the race. He would find himself further back and rally late race to the 4th place finish. The 131 of Royal Jones would round out the Top 5 after an early race spin in 1 and 2 and having to line up at the tail.

All in all, it was a good night of racing. And as long as we are racing; there will be some rubbing. Guaranteeing that it isn’t always pretty. Congratulations to all of tonight’s winners.
